BUDWEISER DEFECTIVE BOTTLES - August 2001

3 AUGUST 2001 – BUDWEISER BOTTLE RECALL – WHASSUP?

Anheuser-Busch Europe announced the recall of the recently introduced Budweiser 946ml bottle sold through off-trade customers in the UK. This package represents about 1 per cent of the Budweiser volume sold in the market. No other Budweiser bottle or can packages in the UK or any other countries are affected by this recall.

Anheuser-Busch investigation

This step is being taken as a precautionary measure due to the shattering of a small number of these bottles. Anheuser-Busch and glass manufacturer technical experts are investigating the exact cause of the breakage.

"Budweiser is committed to maintaining the highest quality standards, and the safety of our consumers is of utmost importance," said Andrew J Day, Managing Director and Vice President of European operations for Anheuser-Busch. "While we have had fewer than 20 instances of bottles breaking, we believe this precautionary recall is appropriate."

Anheuser-Busch and off-trade retailers that sell this product have begun to remove the product from shelves. A small quantity of the remaining bottles might still be in the hands of consumers who purchased it prior to the recall.

The newly introduced bottle is part of Budweiser's repositioning and restyling of its brand in the market, which includes the end of the infamous 'whassup' adverts.

The re-brand will include changing the lettering on its packaging, from a block typeface to script, in a bid to court the quality end of the alcoholic beverages market.
