BREWING THROUGH THE AGES

Carling Black Label was a brand of beer chiefly remembered today due to a catchy advertising jingle featuring a fictional waitress: "Hey Mabel, Black Label!"  Black Label beer appeared, after the company was bought by Cleveland, Ohio

Carling, the city, was started near what is now London, Ontario London is a city in southwestern Ontario, Canada with a population of about 337,318; its metropolitan area has a population of about 432,451 (2001). It was settled in 1826 and established as a city in 1855. London and the surrounding area (roughly, the territory between Kitchener, Ontario and Chatham, Ontario) are collectively known as Western Ontario. London is known as the "Forest City" due to its large areas of parkland and extensive tree cover.

Over the next several decades, Carling expanded out of northern Ohio and built or bought several breweries around the country as part of a complicated series of takeovers and expansions. By the early 1970s, increased pressure from national firms like Miller Brewing Co. and Anheuser-Busch

The company is known in the United States for its huge advertising presence, including a sports marketing division which creates advertising material for the Super Bowl and many other sporting events. Famous Busch television campaigns have included the "Gimme a light" spots, frogs and lizards saying 'bud-wei-ser', the annual Bud Bowl, the "Waazzzup" series, and others. hurt Carling, as well as many other mid-size beer companies. In 1979, Carling-National was bought out by the G. Heileman Brewing Co. of LaCrosse, Wisconsin.

If your a fan of racing, and in particular NASCAR racing, you already know that the big three in the beer business all sponsor race cars in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.  Back in the seventies, Carling was into racing at least for a short while. Back then, the Winston Cup Series was simple known as the Nascar Grand National division. During the 1972 NASCAR season, Carling sponsored a car driven by rookie of the year contender Larry Smith. Larry drove a jet black #92 Mercury Cyclone and went on that year to win rookie-of-the-year honors.Carling went all out during this venture with awesome looking pit crew uniforms,VIP perks, and even a cheerleader for special events known as the "Carling Darling". The next season, with Carling Black Label still sponsoring the car, but with a red paint scheme with black lettering, Larry was killed at Talladega in 1973. Carling, looking to stay in the sport to help save their struggling southeast brewery in Atlanta, sponsored Earl Ross in the #52 Chevelle pictured below.

Earl was struggling as a rookie of the year contender, so midway through the 1974 season, Carling struck a deal with Junior Johnson to run a two car team with Cale Yarbourough as the other driver.Cale would drive a Chevelle or Monte Carlo, depending on the track. Cale won 4 races the remainder of the year for Carling and went on to finish second in the points chase. Earl Ross won the rookie of the year title and finished a respectable eight in the overall points standings.Earl was (and still is) also the only foreign citizen  to win a race i n NASCAR's premier division when he won at Martinsville that same year. Carling had sponsored Earl Ross and his short track car in Canada for years.

Unfortunately, this was all going on about the time when Carling was losing market share and money. The sponsorship ended after that incredible year. The Atlanta brewery closed not too much longer after that.  It was a shame that Carling couldn't afford the Cale Yarbourough sponsorship as  he went on to win the Championship in 1976, 1977, and 1978 !

Carling Black Label is a pilsenerof 4.1% abv, brewed by Bass (now Coors Brewers UK) at Burton-upon-Trent

For centuries years Burton has been associated with the brewing industry due to the quality of the local water. Much of the open land within and around the town is protected from chemical treatment to help preserve water quality. Due to the high proportion of dissolved salts in the water, predominately caused by the gypsum in the surrounding hills, Burton beers grew popular during the Victorian era.

Carling Black Label is best known for a series of adverts showing someone doing something cool, clever or difficult, and having a bystander say "I bet he drinks Carling Black Label". Largely because of the advertising campaign, it has been the best-selling brand of beer in Britain since 1971 Centuries: 19th century - 20th century - 21st century

The words 'student-beer' and 'where's the aspirin?' come to mind when Carling Black Label is mentioned. This is the mainstay tipple of students in South Africa - and for those who are not concerned with taste or the cracking hangover to be had the next day. If you want to get into a fight and be beaten up quickly without spending much, then this is your beer. A typical, 'what-the-hell-are-you-looking-at' beer with a hangover to match.  It is packaged in a fairly innocous brown bottle and is about 5.5%. Bitter - too bitter I found to my liking, and it didn't leave a very nice after-taste either.  If you havent tried it, please do...just so you know what you aren't missing. Available in either cans or bottles.
