A new drinks company has been formed in support of an unusual project..... A group of engineers with environmental hopes want to see if an electric boat can circumnavigate the world using only renewable energy. The 120' multihull is said to be capable of exceeding 10 knots from two electric motors, without producing any pollution at all. The idea is to prove alternative energy for marine transportation, has practical applications. Depending on weather conditions, the circumnavigation could be completed in a little over 100 days sailing time.
Nelson Kruschandl - project manager
Solar Cola is billed as a refreshing drink based on a traditional recipe and full of natural goodness and energy. Cola drinkers will have to wait to try this new flavour, to decide for themselves. For every can sold, $0.10c goes to the build and expedition stages of the circumnavigation project.
The 'Solar Navigator World Challenge' project manager said:
"We hope to attract sponsors and partners to our project with a new marketing package." "The Solar Navigator website attracts more hits per day than any other marine project. Our project is no more costly to run than comparable sailing attempts, but offers a new slant to marine challenges to encompass environmental and cutting edge solar research."
Solar SWATH design
Two European teams are now planning to try and set world navigation records in a solar powered boat. The first team is from the United Kingdom, led by Nelson Kruschandl. His vessel is called Solar Navigator. The development of this project has been mostly in the backyard and on local waters.
The second and latest team to decide to go for it as of March 16 2006, are PlanetSolar, a Swiss/French team is made up of 15 persons, 11 concerned with the boat and expedition directly and 4 on a sponsorship committee - as listed below.
THE BOATS
Though the technology is similar, the designs use quite different approaches. In fact the Solar Navigator started out as a SWATH design, first exhibited at Earls Court in 1995. Since that time various wave piercing models have been developed and tested, the aim being to improve performance and reduce build costs. Both teams estimate similar travel times. One day it may be possible to travel around the world on solar power, in under 80 days. Jules Verne would have loved this. See also, the Swiss Transatlantic Sun 21 attempt using the almanac below.
According to their website, the Solar Cola Company is looking for distributors for this unique cola across the globe. If you are interested, please contact them for details using the email or telephone number below. We have also included links below to the Solar Navigator website.
